Your tooth enamel is composed of a complex structure of microscopic mineral crystals. This is what gives your teeth the strength the need to bite and chewing food, as well to resist tooth decay.

Unfortunately, your tooth enamel can be cracked or chipped by a trauma, grinding your teeth or chewing on ice, pens or other objects.

When this happens, it’s important to have the tooth examined by an experienced dentist like Dr. Alfred Haeberer. If your tooth is left untreated the damage could become worse, and a cavity could develop.

In cases of significant damage, Dr. Alfred Haeberer may recommend restoring the entire layer of tooth enamel with a dental crown. The interior of the crown is hollow, and it is placed over the healthy dentin layer of the tooth.

Once any remaining tooth enamel has been removed, the dentist will make an impression of the tooth and the surrounding area. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where your permanent crown will be created by highly trained dental technicians.

When your new dental crown is ready, you will come in for your second appointment. After the dentist cements the crown in place, it should last for many years.

If you live in the Potomac Falls, Virginia, area and you have a chipped or fractured tooth, you should call (703) 291.0884 to have it treated at Haeberer Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.
