Do you know when to see your dentist for a dental emergency? Do you know what to do if an emergency suddenly arises? Don’t panic, as you have a couple of options if you find yourself in a dental emergency situation.

First, during daytime hours we ask that you call our Haeberer Family & Cosmetic Dentistry team in Potomac Falls, Virginia to be seen by Dr. Alfred Haeberer as soon as possible. This is important when it comes down to saving a tooth. Seeing your dentist within 30 minutes of knocking out a tooth can mean the difference between losing the affected tooth or saving and keeping it.

While not every dental mishap needs immediate treatment, it helps to call our team so that we can make sure you have the right options at your disposal, and that means determining how soon you need to be seen.

Some emergencies can be scheduled for treatment at a later time. An emergency that can wait, for example, is a dental crown which has fallen off. This can be re-cemented another time if it is not causing you pain.

However, an oral injury that has loosened a tooth considerably, or knocked it out of its socket, requires more immediate treatment. To determine whether or not you are experiencing a true dental emergency, or having a dental issue that can wait to be remedied, you can ask yourself the following:

If you are experiencing a true dental emergency requiring same day treatment, the following may apply:

— There is severe swelling or bulges in the gums.
— There is severe pain in the mouth.
— A tooth feels loose enough to fall out or has fallen out.
— You have bleeding in the mouth that isn’t slowing.
— There has been trauma to your mouth or face.

Your second option, if your dentist is not available, is being seen by an emergency room physician. This is especially helpful if your emergency is after hours.
